The Vysoke Tatry, High Tatras, which borders the Poland and Slovakia, is no doubt the jewel in Slovakia's crown of attractions. The area is very well developed with a network of villages, huts and well-marked trails and ski runs in the foothills. Some of these trails lead up to the higher cwms and cross high mountain passes. In some places, these routes are equipped with chains like the via ferratas in the Dolomites.

The area is part of TANAP, Tatra National Park and there is a small access charge ( at least on the Polish side). The park is the home of a very rich diversity of fauna, including bears, eagles, lynx and the kamzik, mountain goat. A walk up to the higher cwms will take you through various changes in bio-habitats from coniferous to sub-montane to montane zones.

The city of Poprad is the primary point of entry to the Vysoke Tatry region. Poprad has an airport and extensive bus and rail links. From Poprad buses and modern electric rail system serves the remote Tartry villages. You can even get a bus to Poland from Poprad.

The official web site can be found here.
