Bardejov is an almost perfectly preserved walled medieval town not far from the Polish border. It was built by Saxon weavers who colonized the area in the 12th century. The stare mesto, old town, perched on a small hill still retains most of its Gothic fortifications including 4 of the original bastions on the Eastern wall. These walls have a symbolism; a barrier against the gray concrete postwar developments sprawled without.
